Uta’s Diary and Memories

I found out that my friend, Cordula Braun/Lepsius, died in July 2011, aged 76. I knew her already, when she was two years old. I have very good memories about her over many, many years, even though we lived in different countries for most of our lives, and with advancing age, I had less and less communication with her. Dear Cordula is in that picture, that was taken in Berlin, Bozener Strasse on on my birthday, the 21st of September 1947. About a year later she became an orphan, and she moved away from Berlin to live with some of her aunts. We kept in touch over many years. But I think I saw her only once together with her husband and two children, when she was already a bit past 50. She married late. I think she had her children in her early forties! Cordula was born on the 20th of May 1935.

All my birthday guests are in that picture, that my mother took of us. In the front of the picture is my brother Peter, who is nearly six. Beside him is Ruth Todtenhausen, who is nearly four. I stand behind Peter. I turned thirteen on this day. My brother Bodo is on the left. He is nine. Beside him Eva Todtenhausen, who is going on twelve, and beside Eva is Cordula, who is twelve. The next one is mainly a friend of Eva’s, but I did get to know her a bit too. I think she was the daughter of a baker, but I can’t remember her name. I remember the name of my schoolfriends in that picture. They are: Irene Flemming, Lieselotte Lindequest, Jutta Lange, and Gisela Blankemann.

It is 2022 now. So, 1947 was 75 years ago. I turned 13 then, and now I am going to turn 88.

Matthew’s and Gerard’s birthdays are coming up. Their birthday is on the same day! On the 7th of August Gerard turns 82 and Matthew turns 54. Martin did come last Thursday with his beautiful dog Millie to spend a few days with me here in Dapto, NSW. Martin lives in Benalla, Victoria. Today is Saturday, Tonight Monika and Mark are coming here for a visit to see Martin. Caroline and Matthew cannot see Martin this weekend. They have to stay home and rest for they both have a cold, Tomorrow Monika’s son Ryan with Ebony and children Lucas and Alexander perhaps may visit us too. This would be really good

On Wednesday, the 21st of September is my 88th birthday! I asked my neighbours to come to my birthday, for coffee and cake! Hopefully the weather is going to be good, so that we can all sit outside on my beautiful deck. I don’t think, Gerard wants to come to my birthday. Anyhow, this is how he seems to feel right now, that we should not attempt to see each other. Maybe this is just a sign of advancing old age, that one gets to see less and less people. Even family members one gets to see less and less.

But so far the family has planned to spend to spend the weekend following my birthday at our Sussex Inlet holiday place. Great-grandson Alexander is going to be eight on the 27th of September. There two more birthdays earlier in September: Granddaughter Natasha turns 31 on the 11th, and great-granddaughter Evie turns thee on the 13th of September. Last year we were still in a strict lockdown in September! I am glad, that there are no more lockdowns now.

    1. I feel sad, that Gerard, an old family friend, who lives in the Southerb Highlands of NSW, is not willing to make an effort to see me. Sussex Inlet is already booked out. So we have to give this a miss.

Peter-Uwe, one of my two brothers, is still alive. He turned 80 last October, but he lives in Berlin, Germany. In that picture from 1947 he is close to 6.

Gerard turns 82 on the 7th of this month. On that same day Matthew turns 54.

My daughter Caroline and son-in-law Matthew live in Sydney, They are both sick right now and need to rest. Caroline tested positive for Covid!
